साकेताख्या ज्यायामासीद्याविप्रादीप्ता आर्याधारा ।
पूराजीतादेवाद्याविश्वासाग्र्यासावाशारावा ॥2॥ … अनुलोम (रामकथा)
saaketaakhyaa jyaayaamaaseedyaavipraadeeptaa aaryaadhaaraa ।
pooraajeetaadevaadyaavishvaasaagryaasaavaashaaraavaa ॥2॥
साकेताख्या – Saaketa is another name for Ayodhya. aakhyaa means named
ज्यायाम् – jyaa means earth. So this means on earth.
आसीत् – was
या – which
विप्रादीप्ता – आदीप्त is shining, with विप्रा: that is Brahmins
आर्याधारा – आर्या: means the merchant community and आधारा means the support (of the city) and therefore this indicates its riches
पू: – city
आजीता – aajeeh is ajasya apatyam pumaan i.e. the son of Aja and tena itah is acquired by him and therefore this means Ayodhya
अदेवाद्याविश्वास – no lack of faith in or no fear from the devas (Gods). By using the double negative – adeva and avishvaasah the meaning becomes positive. This implies the frequent attendance of the devas there in order to partake the offering of the sacrifices conducted continuously.
अग्र्या – first and foremost – i.e. Ayodhya (the first sacred city mentioned in the shloka listing the seven cities which give liberation to the one who leaves the body there) –
अयोध्या मथुरा माया काशीं काञ्चि अवन्तिका ।
पूरी द्वारवती चैव सप्तैदाः मोक्षदायिकाः ॥
सावाशारावा – sava is sacrifice and savaashaa (savam asnanti) means devas, those who eat out of the sacrifice, taking the offerings. Aaraavaa is tumultuous sound here meaning that of the devas who throng there to partake the offerings.
There was a city called Ayodhya, on earth, which was shining with brahmins who were well-versed in vedas, and with merchants and was the place of abode of Dasaratha, the son of Aja, and it was always attended by the devas who assembled there to partake the offerings of the sacrifices and it was the first and foremost of all the cities on earth.
