inअजरामरवत् प्राज्ञः विद्याम् अर्थं च साधयेत् ।
गृहितः इव केशेषु मृत्युना धर्मम् आचरेत् ।
Considering that old age and death will not come to us, we should pursue (worldly) knowledge and wealth (and use both for the betterment of the society)and considering that death is holding us by the hair (i.e. it is very near) we should perform our duty (live a life of Dharma).
Wealth and (worldly) knowledge do not accompany us after death (and will be left behind in this world as it is to be used by others, so why not use it for the good of the world?) only the Paapa- Punya that we have earned is going to accompany us after death. So why not earn as much Punya as possible by performance of one’s allocated duties, which incidentally also is one’s Dharma.

inहंसः श्वेतः ,बकः श्वेतः , को भेदो बकहंसयोः ।
नीरक्षीरविवेके तु हंसो हंसो ,बकः बकः ॥
The swan is white and the stork is also white. Then what is the difference between a swan and a stork? When it comes to separate water and milk a swan is a swan and a stork is a stork!
नीर क्षीर विवेकः
It is believed that if water and milk are mixed and kept in front or the swan it has the capability of only drinking the milk from it and leaving behind the water as it is. This capability to distinguish between the two is called neera ksheera viveka.
When speaking for a spiritual seeker this is a very important capability that every spiritual seeker has to develop he has to be capable of distinguishing between the real and the unreal and only then can he progress on the spiritual path. The discriminating capacity has to be in regard to the following five aspects:-
The part and the whole (Amsha-Amshi viveka )
The means and the goal (Sadhana-Sadhya viveka)
The good and the pleasant (Shreyas-Preyas viveka)
The Self and the Non-Self (Aatma-Anaatma viveka) and
The Eternal and the Ephimeral (Nitya-Anitya viveka)
In this samsara both aspects of the above pairs are present and intimately mixed together as milk and water can be. We have to be able to use the Neera- Ksheera viveka to distinguish between the two and understand which is going to lead us to our goal.

inसर्पाः पिबन्ति पवनं न च दुर्बलाः ते,

The snake survives on air and is still not weak, the jungle elephant on dry grass and becomes strong, the ascetics pass their time on berries and fruits (hence), contentment is man’s ultimate refuge (treasure).

A person fond of virtues does not get disappointed (or disturbed) on seeing a defect in a virtuous person just as people watch even the dark spots on the moon with lots of interest.

Just as Gold has to pass through four tests of scrubbing, (to see if the shine is only superficial), breaking (to check its tenacity), heating (to see if it turns black), and hammering (to see if it is malleable) to ascertain its purity. Similarly every man has to pass through four tests of knowledge, character, virtues and behavior to prove that he is a good human being.
