For a killer of a wise person, a drunkard, a thief, a person who has broken his promise, there is atonement available, say the learned… but for an ungrateful person there is no expiation available (which can nullify the effects of the wrong done). (Being ungrateful is the worst of all the evils a person can succumb to…)

There is a vast difference between the body and the virtues of a person. The body is ephemeral while the fame of the virtuous person is eternal.

One whose mind and senses are not under control such a person’s behaviour is like an elephants bath. After acquiring any knowledge if it is not put to use, it becomes a burden and can be compared to an ill fortuned person wearing an expensive piece of jewellery.
(The elephant takes tons of water on his body to clean it and finally sprays himself with mud again, which, nullifies all the efforts he has taken to clean himself. Similarly a person whose mind and senses are unbridled himself reverses the effects of his good actions by his own behaviour.
A person whose mind is not under control will not be able to enjoy even a beautiful piece of jewellery as he will always be worried about its safety, will be wishing it was more classy… the list is endless, so the jewellery will as if become a burden for him rather than a source of happiness. The subhashitakara is calling such a person unfortunate.)

True love can be said to exist (between people) only when, a year seems like a day if they are together, and a day seems like a year if they are apart!

Till a person enjoys good health, there is no disease in the body, old age has not caught up with him, all the limbs are energetic, (in short) he is not on his deathbed, a wise person should sincerely strive towards his liberation (Moksha i.e. Freedom from the cycle of birth and death). What is the use of digging a well when the house is on fire?

All the talents (like singing, painting and other arts) are like bangles, armlets, ear rings which compliment the natural beauty of a person, which is of primary importance. The quality of utmost importance is good character.
Even without all the ornaments a person can be naturally beautiful similarly good character is a standalone quality which makes a person beautiful and charismatic.

Whether a good student or a bad student, he/she (every student) is a human being not a clod of earth. (Recognising the capability of the student the teacher) has definitely to take less or more efforts (on him).

Only wetting the body with water does not actually constitute a real bath. Purifying the whole being from head to toe and controlling the (unbridled) senses (as well) cleanses internally as well as externally.
This shloka reminds me of a beautiful bhajan by Shri Hari Om Sharanji…
मन मैला और तन को धोए ।
फूल तो चाहे कांटे बोए ।।
mana maila aur tana ko dhoye
phool to chaahe kanTe boye
When the mind is dirty, what is the use of washing the body. It is like hoping to get a beautiful flower (Rose) by sowing thorns.
Those of you who understand Hindi can enjoy this bhajan on YouTube here …
