मृत्तिकानां सहस्त्रैस्तु उदकुम्भशतैरपि l
न शुध्यन्ति दुरात्मानो येषां भावो न निर्मलः ll
mruttikaanaam sahastraistu udakumbhashatairapi l
na shudhyanti duraatmaano yeShaam bhaavo na nirmalah ll
Even washing oneself with thousand tons of earth (soap in present day) and bathing with hundreds of buckets of water will not cleanse the person whose heart (and thoughts and character) is not pure.
I am reminded of a beautiful Bhajan by Pandit Hari Om Sharan which goes like this –
मन मैला और तन को धोये (man mailaa aur tan ko dhoye) What is the use of washing the body when the mind is dirty?
